"This Boy We Made": A Conversation with Author Taylor Harris

Basser Young Leadership Council co-chair Erika Stallings, Esq. in conversation with BRCA mutation carrier and advocate Taylor Harris, author of "This Boy We Made": A Memoir of Motherhood, Genetics, and Facing the Unknown. Taylor discusses navigating health and education systems as a Black mother, her young son’s medical challenges, and how all of those experiences have helped to shape her life. 

Men & BRCA Educational Panel

A panel discussion focused on men and BRCA gene mutations, including risk factors and surveillance options. Hear from BRCA mutation carrier and advocate, Gary Fuhrman, Penn Medicine physician Vivek Narayan, MD, MSCE, and Basser Genetic Counselor Avi Anantharajah, MS, LCGC. The discussion was moderated by Basser Young Leadership Council member Louis Abrams, Esquire.

Our BRCA Journeys: A Storytelling Event

Susan Domchek, MD, moderated this Central Synagogue panel with individuals across various communities discussing their BRCA mutations and the steps they have taken to reduce their risk.

A BRCA Family Affair: The Garcia Family Shares Their Story

Basser Young Leadership Council member and patient advocate Nicole Garcia, her mother, Mariana Garcia, and her sister, Marisa Martinez, discuss their family's journey with BRCA, including how they've managed their personal cancer risk, and how the Latinx community can better educate themselves about family cancer history. The panel was moderated by Alejandra Campoverdi, co-founder of the Basser Center's LATINX & BRCA initiative.

This virtual panel features Black families impacted by BRCA-related cancer in discussion with a Basser Center genetic counselor. Presented in collaboration with the Basser Center’s Black & BRCA initiative, Cancer Awareness Network, Sisters R Us Circle of Survivors, My Style Matters, and Wawela Cancer Support.
